Purnima Barman of the non-governmental organization, Aaranyak, rallied the people of Assam’s Brahmaputra valley to work to restore greater adjutant storks in India. She formed a grassroots women’s group known as the ‘Hargila Brigade’ to work with landowners to successfully reverse the trend of nesting storks. For her decade of effort, she was awarded the Whitley Prize in 2017 and in 2018 she was presented the Nari Shakti Purashkar Award, the most prestigious civilian accolade in India, by President Ram Nath Kovind. Barman is also a member of the Women for Nature Network.
